Antioxidant activities of lichen metabolites developed in vitro

چکیده

The crude extract contains many compounds along with the various lichen metabolites and it is very difficult to say which compound(s) has the antioxidant potential unless and until it is purified. In the previous Chapter 3 & 4 the biological activities of Usnea ghattensis attributed to the crude extract containing usnic acid and norstictic acid have been presented. In order to know the antioxidant properties of lichen metabolites of the remaining cultured lichen species Arthothelium awasthii (producing barbatic acid), Heterodermia podocarpa (producing atranorin and zeorin), Parmotrema tinctorum (producing atranorin and lecanoric acid) have been fractionated, the lichen metabolites were partially purified and their antioxidant activities were evaluated and are presented below.

Biological activities of secondary lichen metabolites

Lichens produce a great variety of secondary metabolites and most of them are unique. These chemically diverse lichen substances accumulate on the outer surfaces of the hyphae. They have several biological activities, including photoprotection against intense radiation, as well as allelochemical, antiviral, antitumor, antibacterial, antiherbivore, antioxidant, antipyretic, and analgesic action....

Phytochemical and antioxidant studies of Laurera benguelensis growing in Thailand.

The aim of this study was to investigate metabolites of the lichen Laurera benguelensis. A high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method has been developed for the characterization of xanthones and anthraquinones in extracts of this lichen. Lichexanthone, secalonic acid D, norlichexanthon, parietin, emodin, teloschistin and citreorosein were detected in the lichen samples, which were co...

A Multifunctional and Possible Skin UV Protectant, (3R)-5-Hydroxymellein, Produced by an Endolichenic Fungus Isolated from Parmotrema austrosinense.

Lichens are considered a great bio-resource because they produce large numbers of secondary metabolites with many biological activities; however, they have not been cultivated under artificial conditions to date. As a result, lichen substances from natural sources are limited and have not been widely utilized in commercial applications. Accordingly, interest in lichen-associated fungi, especial...

Antioxidative Activity of Lichen Thamnolia vermicularis in vitro

This study was aimed at evaluating the antioxidant activities of methanol extract of Thamnolia vermicularis. The antioxidant activity, reducing power, superoxide anion radical scavenging and free radical scavenging activities were studied. The antioxidant activity of the extract correlated with its concentration (0.2~2 mg/ml) in the reaction mixtures containing linoleic acid. Upto 67% of lipid ...
